They are the most common and frequently used words and are foundational words that are used to build a child’s vocabulary. In 2nd grade, children are exposed to a broader range of Dolch sight words, which expands their reading and writing abilities. Sight words are a collection of words that children need to learn to recognize without sounding out the letters. Of the 220 most commonly taught Dolch sight words, 150 are completely phonetic and can be easily learned by sound. Understanding the sight words for adults is easy. The, that, this, is, am, are, a, an, to, and, from are some examples of sight words. Speed and fluency help with accuracy and increase reading comprehension. However, even though they are common, the human’s brain skips reading these words because we already understand the meaning behind the context without comprehending them for too long. Sight words help to build speed and fluency when reading. The list was first published in a journal article in 1936 and then published in his book Problems in Reading in 1948.
